In the final installment of the 4-part ABC story, we ask the two largest cancer centers in Utah, as well as hyperthermic oncology practitioners around the world "Why is hyperthermia underutilized in the US"?. The answers vary from, not being aware of the positive clinical evidence, to a belief that reimbursement is not profitable. And of those doctors who have heard of the therapy, knowledge of thermal oncology is often outdated.
But there is hope. When asked what it would take to offer this technology to their patients they state, "if there was clinical evidence to support hyperthermia, we would use it".
That is good news, because there is a wealth of information, including phase III clinical studies, showing how effective adding hyperthermia to chemotherapy or radiotherapy improves outcomes. If you missed part three, you can view it here.
